Charter panel to ask Select Board to shrink itself
Other Committee · Meeting of August 11, 2026
Paxton Charter Review Committee eyes shrinking itself from seven members to five. The committee has no budget for legal review, printing or mailing after Monday's property-tax override failed at the polls, members said at Tuesday's meeting, leaving the group to lean on town counsel and digital outreach instead of print surveys. Committee member Robert asked whether the override's failure would affect the group's timeline "because you no longer have to have a legal budget or mailing budget or any budget of sort." The panel is aiming to hand a complete charter draft to the Select Board by December, with town boards reviewing it in January 2027 and legal review in March, before a town-wide vote and final state Attorney General approval.
The committee also held back proposed language giving the Select Board authority over election rules after liaison Jeff warned it could appear to let the board "control the elections."
