Paxton charter panel strips town administrator search rules

Other Committee · Meeting of September 8, 2026

Paxton's Charter Review Committee strips several proposed restrictions on hiring and overseeing the town administrator. Meeting with just three of its five members for quorum, the panel rejected draft language requiring a documented public search and a seven-member nomination committee for administrator candidates, calling both additions redundant to the Select Board's authority. Members agreed to cap the administrator's contract term at "not to exceed three years," matching current Paxton practice, and extended a vacancy-appointment trigger from 14 days to 14 business days.

Town Administrator Robert told the panel a narrower restriction on outside offices was needed, warning that broad language could let an administrator "live in Paxton" while serving on a neighboring town's board. The committee tabled a larger fight over how much duty-level detail belongs in the charter itself versus a separately adoptable job description, with one member calling the draft's three pages of specifics excessive and another defending them as a safeguard against past confusion over responsibility. Minutes were approved unanimously and the meeting adjourned at 7:11 p.m.
